Many pre-nursing students must complete a nurse assistant program as a prerequisite for admission into a nursing program.

The uniqueness of this program allows a student to gain employment as a certified nurse assistant in one semester!

Current research and trends show excellent job prospects for nurse assistants. Recent state of Illinois occupational projections rank nurse assistants as the fifth leading occupation in the health care field. The Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts nurse assistant employment will grow faster than the national average through the year 2010. The employment growth is partly attributed to the long-term care needs of an aging population. There are approximately 20 nursing homes and four hospitals in the Joliet Junior College district.

The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) and the Illinois Department of Public Health have approved the current Certified Nurse Assistant program for the last 29 years. The state requirement is 120 hours, while JJC’s program is 154 hours.

The Illinois department of public health state certification examination must be taken after completion of NA101. The completion of the entire certificate is nto a requirement to sit for the state examination.
